Participatory Local Governance

Samarthan is committed to strengthening local governance institutions by empowering Village Panchayats (elected representatives and functionaries) to fulfill their roles in economic development and social justice. The devolution of functions to local governance encompasses basic services such as drinking water, sanitation, and public health; environmental and livelihood promotion functions like sustainable agriculture, watershed management, and environmental conservation; and ensuring citizens' rights and entitlements provided by the State, such as pensions, scholarships, and social protection measures. Samarthan provides support to local governance institutions at various tiers—village, block, and district. Vibrant and effective Gram Sabhas (village councils) are achievable through the strengthening of capacities among youth groups, women's self-help groups, and other forms of Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
